In IWB carry, most of the holster is covered by the pants or skirt, and the belt holds it tight to the body. The covering garment hides the top of the pistol, and a tuckable style can provide the option to carry under a tucked-in shirt. A pistol tucked in under a dress shirt is extremely well-concealed. The best position for men is strong side just behind the hip (4:30 position), but many women find that a strong-side appendix position is best for their body shape. IWB carry has the advantages of very good concealment, ideal placement on the belt instead of somewhere else on the body, and good comfort. Our first recommendation for those who are starting concealed carry of a pistol is an IWB holster.

Advantages:
Comfortable for most people
Conceals well for most body sizes, including very thin people
Carry strong side on the belt is ideal
Good IWB holsters are not expensive

Disadvantages:
Pants need to be sized to fit over the pistol – this means new pants for most shooters.

Special IWB Holster

This is a very classic leather IWB holster. It features a slight forward cant and reinforced mouth with sweat shield. The holster attaches to the belt with two leather loops and snaps. The Holster is available in brown or black leather that is molded to the shape of the pistol. It is available unlined or with a suede lining or a teflon Alpha lining. This holster is effective and comfortable, and priced very affordably for a holster of its quality.

The Special IWB Holster is also available in the New Generation material. The N.G. material is an advanced multi-layer material designed in cooperation with the Israeli Defense forces. It has the look of a nylon holster, due to the outer layer of Cordura®, but it has several inner layers designed to fit and protect the pistol. Like a fine leather holster, the N.G. holster is molded to the shape of each pistol, and has good rigidity, which nylon holsters do not have. The inner layer of the N.G. holster is a waterproof velvet that protects the finish of the pistol. New Generation holsters have all of the benefits of a leather holster, with increased durability and comfort. The N.G. holsters are also more affordable than leather holsters, while maintaining the same level of quality.

For those whose taste runs more to the tactical advantages of Kydex®, the Special IWB holster is also available in a durable molded Kydex, with or without a suede lining. In an IWB holster, the suede lining is not needed to prevent the Kydex® from being broken by someone trying to snatch the pistol, but it does quiet the draw and protect the finish of the pistol.

Yamam IWB Holster

My personal favorite IWB holster is the Yamam holster. This holster was designed for the Israeli Yamam counter-terrorist and hostage rescue team, one of the leading HRT teams in the world. This holster is designed with the leather rough side out. The result is a smooth surface against the pistol for smoother draws and the rough side against the clothes where it prevents movement of the holster. Loops are slightly smaller than most IWB holsters, being sized to fit a 1.5″ belt perfectly The mouth is reinforced and the angle of cant is ideal for both concealment and draw. The Yamam holster is comfortable and effective, and looks good, too. Price is excellent for a top-quality holster, easily half the price of similar-quality holsters from other manufacturers. This is the holster that is on my belt at all times other than when I need to tuck a shirt in over my pistol.

Ready ‘n’ Safe Glock Holster

The Ready ‘n’ Safe holster is a leather IWB holster designed to help reduce certain risks involved in carrying a Glock pistol with a loaded chamber in a holster. This holster is a variation of the previous model, but features a Kydex® insert that surrounds the trigger guard. This gives the holster positive retention on the pistol, and helps prevent foreign objects from being inserted into the holster with the pistol, possibly causing a negligent discharge. It also removes any possibility that the edge of the leather could be damaged and bent inward enough to touch the trigger of the pistol upon re-holstering. A window in the holster allows the extractor to be both seen and felt to ensure that the chamber is loaded without removing the pistol from the holster. The Ready ‘n’ Safe holster comes with a teflon Alpha Lining.

Deep Concealment Tuckable Holster

This leather IWB holster is designed to be worn inside the waistband under a tucked-in shirt. This is one of the most effective ways to conceal a pistol. The shirt naturally blouses and completely conceals the shape of the pistol. The shape of this holster is designed to make a natural curved shape in the pants, preventing the bulge that normally can advertise a pistol in the waistband. Because of this, it is especially effective for thin wearers who normally have difficulty concealing a pistol. The belt loops are forward and aft of the pistol, moving the thickness of the loops off of the thick part of the holster, further thinning the profile. This also makes the holster very stable – it will not rock at all on the belt. The Deep Concealment Holster is also very versatile: it can be worn IWB under a tucked in shirt, with the shirt untucked, or outside the waistband, with the belt going through the loops but behind the holster. This is the holster I wear any time I want to wear a tucked-in shirt, or anytime I want the pistol to have a low profile, like when I wear it under a close tailored suit jacket, for example. It is also by far the most comfortable IWB holster I have ever tried. It is available in brown or black, unlined or with a suede lining or teflon Alpha lining.

 Hidden Inner-Waistband Tuckable Holster 

This IWB holster features a discrete Kydex® belt clip that allows the holster to be worn under a tucked-in shirt. The black or brown leather is custom molded to each pistol model, and it is available with either suede lining or teflon Alpha lining, or unlined. The mouth of the holster is reinforced. The Kydex clip does not go over the outside of the belt, so it is very discrete.

The Hidden Inner-Waistband holster is also available in a rigid Kydex. The Kydex® version includes two adjustment screws to adjust the tension on the pistol. It is avaialble unlined or with an optional suede lining to quiet the draws and provide protection for the pistol’s finish.

“The father, a 45-year-old Spotsylvania man, was in his minivan with his children waiting for his wife to return a DVD to the Redbox outside the Giant Food Store in Harrison Crossing when he was shot . . . Investigators said Wednesday that the gun the victim was carrying was not housed in a holster. They think it was simply tucked into the waistband of the man’s pants.

The victim’s wife said she believes that when her husband went to adjust the gun, which had likely shifted and become uncomfortable, accidentally discharged.” (CBS6-WTVR)

The pistol was a Glock chambered in .40 S&W. The bullet struck the man’s thigh and severed the femoral artery. He bled out and died before arriving at a hospital. His wife and four children watched him die.

I have read too many reports and seen too many photos of wounds inflicted as a result of pistols carried in waistbands or pockets without holsters. This is a horrible tragedy for everyone involved, and every one of these events strikes a blow against the public perception of legal concealed carry, yet every time this happens, it is completely avoidable.

Please do not carry a pistol without a holster. It is not safe. It is not smart. Don’t do it.

Even the popular side clips that attach directly to a pistol to clip the pistol inside the waistband are not safe. Why? Because there is nothing to protect the trigger, which can be bumped through the pants.

We offer holsters ranging from expensive high-end tactical holsters to quality inexpensive nylon holsters. (Our nylon holsters are lined and rigid, making them safer and more reliable than most nylon holsters.) We have holsters to fit any budget. We even sometimes have used holsters that were returned by a customer who wanted to try a different model, that we cannot sell as new, but are still perfectly serviceable. Whatever your needs and budget, we can work something out to supply a holster, but please do not carry in the waistband without a quality holster.

If you carry in your pocket, you also need a holster. We do not currently offer a pocket holster from Front Line, but if you contact us, we can tell you where to purchase one of several very good pocket holsters built by other companies.

With the holster options available from many quality manufacturers, there is no excuse for anyone to carry a pistol without a holster.
